It was with a combination of hope and uncertainty that the Newmarket Hockey Club U12 boys travelled into the hockey power-house of Cambridge. Testing themselves for the first time in a ranking competition against the strength that City has to offer, they faced 4 sides from Cambridge City and Cambridge South hockey clubs.
A strong 0-1 opening loss to the top Cambridge City side injected confidence, and from there the belief grew and the results came. A 1-0 win was followed by a 1-1 draw which, but for a great performance from the opposition’s goalkeeper, would have seen an excellent team performance rewarded with a comfortable win. With tails up, the boys ran out 2-0 winners in the final game, and came home proud owners of the silver medal.
Goals from Toby Beardon, Logan Andreou, Scott Mitchell, and Todd Anderson, and goal-saving tackles from George Crosby, James Margetts, Leo Park, and Theo Brittain, saw teamwork well rewarded.
