L3’s Too Hot for COP

Saturday 22nd February brought with it unseasonably warm weather for February for Ladies 3s to battle city of Peterborough 5s (COP). With only 2 points separating the 2 teams, a win would put Newmarket back above COP in the table.

After a few weeks of losses due to a lack of goalie, L3 were delighted to have Liv back with her invaluable GK skills.

As was predicted due to the proximity of the teams in the table, the teams were on par during the first half. A few short corners were awarded to Newmarket but COP brought a strong set of defenders who had no qualms in using their whole bodies to block Newmarket’s shots at goal.

Newmarket took this approach on board as defender Melly deflected a shot using her bottom, resulting in a lovely round bruise!

A sugar boost of tangfastics, & a group pep talk at half time resulted in a goal 2 minutes into the second half for Newmarket.

Morale boosted, Newmarket dominated the second half, attacking COP hard & keeping the ball in their half for 80% of the second half. Tireless effort, well-drilled skills, and seamless communication kept COP frustrated. The Ladies 3s weren’t just defending—they were competing. Despite the best efforts of the Newmarket ladies, COP’s strong defence resulted in no further goals, with a finishing scoreline of 1-0 to Newmarket 3s.

A great result & a reflection of the tenacity of the girls.

Special shout outs go to Lily & Lea for taking spectacular tumbles during the game & diving straight back into it with no complaints. (It’s not often someone falls over their own feet though Lily!) Good hockey was played today and more importantly, the Ladies 3s showed they are a team to be reckoned with.
