Liv Wright Plays a Blinder

The team consisting of: Zoe Bailey, Vicky Benedikz, Rachel Kellett, Poppy Montgomery, Liv Wright (GK), Leia Schultz, Isabel Verdonk, Isla McCulloch, Leah Palmer, Peggy Claydon, Murron McCulloch and super sub Melanie Benedikz (stepping in for a poorly Cesca Clow-Wilson).

The L3’s faced a St Ives team sitting at the top of the table on Saturday. They travelled to Newmarket looking to avoid a further set back in their ravaging of 5NW as they were dealt by Newmarket before Christmas, when they were held to a 1-1 draw. St Ives dominated possession and territory from the off, but Newmarket’s back line of Rachel Kellett, Isabel Verdonk and Vicky Benedikz, marshalled by captain Zoe Bailey threw back the St Ives horde on numerous occasions and keeper Liv Wright was found more than up to the task, pulling off several top class saves. Despite St Ives’ dominance, Newmarket has a regular get out through Isla McCulloch whose pace terrified the St Ives defence and won Newmarket some respite and short corners. The entire Newmarket team put in an excellent shift and were unlucky to go in one behind after a scuffed shot snuck in at a post.

Newmarket continued their stoic defending well into the second half, but St Ives created better chances as Newmarket legs tired with all the excellent work they had done. Still only a goal ahead after 50  mins, two quick short corners put St Ives 3 up and a shot through a jungle of legs made it 4. A final goal was scored at the death to put a gloss on St Ives’ score line, but Newmarket came out of the match with loads of credit in the bank.

Full Time: 0-5

Player of the Match; Liv Wright – some outstanding saves and a whole load of run of the mill ones.

Lemon of the Match – Melly Benedikz – self nomination – subbing for someone and forgetting to wear her gum shield.
