Travelling with 10 to Long Sutton was always going to be a challenge, but not enough for Newmarket. Two players travelled arriving unwell, but one played on, so we started with 9.
Line Up: Jo Wright (Debut for Newmarket), Zoe Bailey (c), Jo Graham-Thompson, Rachel Kellett, Isabel Verdonk, Melanie Benedikz, Peggy Claydon, Vicky Benedikz and Natalie Rice.
Captain Bailey sent up with an ambitious 3,3,2 line up in pursuit of victory, with Jo Wright debuting in goal, we look forward to many more appearances in Newmarket Yellow. Newmarket started brightly with plenty of attacking intent, but when you only have 9, natural gaps were there to be exploited by the surging sea of Long Sutton. Newmarket best chance came when a Peggy Claydon shot dinked off the inside of the post but did not cross the line, with the opposition claiming the wind kept it out.
Half Time: 0-0
Up to full numbers, well the full travelling 10, Newmarket closed some gaps and created some more chances. V Benedikz did get the ball in the back net but it was adjudged to have deflected off a Newmarket boot on the way in. Newmarket believed it was a green boot but at least everyone could agree it was a boot so there is that, a complete pancake of a decision. In the end neither team could muster a goal that could count, but Newmarket celebrated like they had won after their monumental efforts.
Full time score: 0-0
This is great result considering the team as a whole was not at full strength.
Player of the Match: Jo Wright for stepping up and Peggy Claydon for her excellent work rate.
Lemon of the Match: Rachel’s Sat Nav allowing her to get lost on the 2-minute journey from the astro to the cricket club for teas – with a late addition and stealing of the Lemon – Zoe Bailey – claimed she had lost her PC face mask but it turned up today in the bag she takes with her…..Hmmmm…….
Honourable Mention: Melanie Benedikz – giving up her home game so the 3s could travel with 10.
